The 2025 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, held from May 2–4 at the Miami International Autodrome, delivered a thrilling weekend of racing, marked by McLaren's dominance, dramatic on-track battles, and a vibrant atmosphere both on and off the circuit.
Sprint Qualifying: Antonelli Makes History
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli etched his name into the record books by becoming the youngest driver to claim pole position in any F1 race format. With a blistering lap of 1:26.482, he secured the top spot for the Sprint, narrowly edging out McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Sprint Race: Norris Capitalizes Amidst Chaos
The Sprint race was a showcase of McLaren's prowess. Lando Norris emerged victorious, finishing just 0.672 seconds ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri behind a safety car. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton secured third place, completing the podium.
The race was not without incident; Max Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for an unsafe release that led to contact with Antonelli during a pit stop. Multiple other drivers also received penalties by the FIA following the race, shaking up the final classification.
Grand Prix Qualifying: Verstappen Seizes Pole
In the main qualifying session, Max Verstappen delivered a stellar performance, clinching pole position with a time of 1:26.204. He narrowly outpaced Lando Norris by 0.065 seconds, with Antonelli and Piastri following closely behind.
Race Day: Piastri's Commanding Victory
The Grand Prix race was a testament to Oscar Piastri's skill and McLaren's strategic excellence. Despite starting fourth, Piastri methodically advanced through the field, overtaking Verstappen on lap 14 to seize the lead. He maintained his position to the finish, securing his third consecutive win and fourth of the season.
Lando Norris, after an aggressive start that saw him drop to sixth, recovered impressively to finish second. George Russell claimed third for Mercedes, though he missed the post-race press conference due to stomach issues.
Williams had another great weekend, with Albon delivering an impressive P5 and Sainz finishing in P9. Sainz attempted a dramatic lunge on Lewis Hamilton on the final lap, leading to contact between the two drivers. Fortunately both cars were not damaged and Hamilton held on to P8 in another disappointing weekend for Ferrari.
